Douglas Squirrels (AKA Chickaree) are some of the loudest creatures in the forests of the Pacific Northwest. Most likely, you’ll find them ferociously “barking” to warn of danger or defend their territories. Did you know, a single Chickaree can have a territory of up to about 10,000 square meters? That’s almost 2.5 acres of land! Which is a lot to defend for such a small beast! John Muir adored Douglas Squirrels so much that he dubbed them “the squirrel of squirrels”. Consequently, he wrote a whole beautiful chapter on them! It’s quite a lovely read and you can find it here!
